Psalm 90 (89) chanted in the Sarum Use by Sarah James.
Themes: The eternity of God, the frailty of the state of man, the general limits of human life and the danger of displeasing God. It is good to think about the shortness of life, as this gives us a heart of wisdom.
In Judaism: This psalm is recited during the Pesukei Dezimra during Shabbat, Yom Tov, and Hoshana Rabbah. It is recited on Shabbat Nachamu (the Shabbat after Tisha B'Av) in some traditions. Verse 17 is recited following Motzei Shabbat Maariv and the first paragraph of the Shema during bedtime prayers. It is one of the ten psalms of the Tikkun HaKlali of Rebbe Nachman of Breslov.
In Christianity: Verse 4 is quoted in 2 Peter 3:8. The hymn "O God, our help in ages past" is a lyrical version of Psalm 90 written by Isaac Watts.
Nine hundred years ago, the Cathedral of Salisbury, England developed a unique form of chant and liturgy known as the “Use of Salisbury,” or “Sarum Use.” Differences from the Roman rite are both melodic (more florid in the Sarum) and textual (Elizabethan English rather than Latin). The best repository of Sarum Use tones is the St. Dunstan's Plainsong Psalter, from which Sarah has sung this psalm. Additional resources on Sarum Use plainsong at https://canticasacra.org.
