Nisargadatta Maharaj was born as Maruti Shivrampant Kambli on April 17, 1897, in Bombay (Mumbai), India, into a humble and devout Hindu family.
During his youth, he lived a simple life as a cigarette merchant. At the age of 34, he met his spiritual teacher, Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj, who gave him a direct instruction:
"Remain in the sense of ‘I Am,’ and everything else will reveal itself."
By following this teaching with complete dedication, Maruti awakened to his true nature and took the name Nisargadatta, meaning “naturally established in the Self.”
Although he never sought disciples, over time he became one of the greatest sages of the 20th century, recognized worldwide for his clarity and directness.
His teachings were recorded by disciples and published in the renowned book “I Am That,” which has become a classic of non-dual (Advaita) spirituality.
Nisargadatta Maharaj passed away in 1981, but his message lives on:
"You are not what you think you are. You are pure consciousness, free and infinite."
