The short letter of Jude is as relevant today as when it was written. David Pawson argues that this “strange little letter” has been unfairly neglected despite being “one of the most important” books in the New Testament. As some of the references will seem obscure to the modern (non-Jewish) reader, David guides us through them, revealing a wealth of insights. He also provides his own paraphrase of the entire letter.

In a departure from his usual talks and writings, David shares his thought process as he prepared to preach on the letter to his congregation for the first time. He shows that many of the doctrinal errors that were being made 2,000 years ago are again spreading worldwide through the Internet and corrupting the church from within.

This false teaching includes cheap grace (unconditional forgiveness), the belief that there is no need for further repentance or the confession of sins, that grace covers “all the sins, past, present and future, so that nothing could separate you from God’s love by way of your sinning”. The false teachers of Jude’s day were using grace as a “licence for immorality”. Then, as now, there are those who questioned the uniqueness of Jesus through the false teaching that “he was not the only Saviour and Lord; he was not unique; he was one of others, one of many”. Jude teaches that God will deal with these false teachers. Meanwhile, the true believers are to strengthen themselves by studying scripture — the “faith once delivered to the saints”.
