Back in the 1930's the north end of the passing siding at Melville, RI was shortened a few car lengths around the same time passenger service ended. 1937 was the year passenger service was cancelled and no regular passenger trains utilized the track through here until the Old Colony & Newport Railway started excursions in 1979. Since then a dinner train, now operated by the Newport & Narragansett Bay Railroad, has been using those tracks as well. The dinner train company is now currently investing in the Melville area and improving track for ease of operations. This includes restoring the north end of the Melville siding to it's pre-1937(Approximate date) length as well as a portion of a long gone spur originally built in 1942 for the Navy. These restorations will improve current operations for the dinner train as well as the Old Colony & Newport and Rail Explorers. This video shows the view from the locomotive on an Old Colony & Newport Railway charter as we traversed the siding in both directions.
