Gene Warren and Tim Baar won an Oscar for their special effects in this sequence. It combines time lapse photography with some (stop motion) animation. The animation is very convincing, even to the point that it's hard to tell what's real and what's crafted. The sled-like time machine itself was designed by Bill Ferrari.
