Starting off at the White Horse we go behind the pub to find our path and follow the fence for a gradual ascent.

After leaving the fence this becomes a little steeper before we cross over into the next valley. This relatively flat path will guide us to the correct side of the tarn to reach Sharp Edge.

Sharp edge is a legendary grade 1, dangerous, knife edge scramble which is a great challenge and exhilarating walk. Once the ridge is complete a rocky climb takes us up to a steady walking path. We continue along the route to Blencathra’s summit.

After admiring the views we double back past the white cross and Mungrisdale Common on our way to Bannerdale Crags. Once collecting our second wainwright of the day we take the grassy path to the valley floor. According to the Wainwright books this is down to a Threlkeld man, Harold Robinson, who added a lump of quartzite each time he climbed the hill. This feature becomes his memorial.

Crossing the bridge, we head up towards Southerfell. Then work our way back to the White Horse for some well deserved refreshments.
