Displaced white farmers in Zimbabwe have sought US President Donald Trump’s intervention to secure a promised $3.5 billion compensation package from the Zimbabwean government. The dispute dates back to the early 2000s, when former President Robert Mugabe’s administration seized land from approximately 4,000 white farmers, a move that triggered violence and economic instability. While the current government agreed to the compensation in 2020, payments have been inconsistent due to economic constraints. Recently, following President Trump’s imposition of tariffs on Zimbabwe in 2025, the Mnangagwa administration initiated partial payments and scrapped duties on US imports in an apparent bid to ease diplomatic tensions. However, farmers have said that these payments are significantly lower than promised.
