American Atheists and Secular Woman have jointly released a new report on nonreligious women, who are too-often dismissed, stereotyped, and marginalized, both within nonreligious communities and more broadly in our society. Based on data from the more than 13,500 nonreligious women that participated in the U.S. Secular Survey, this report highlights their needs and priorities and examines the stigma and discrimination that nonreligious women face. Join us as we discuss the findings of this new report and provide recommendations for secular organizations that seek to better engage and support nonreligious women.
Our Presenters:
Alison Gill is American Atheists’ Vice President for Legal & Policy, managing the organization’s federal and state advocacy for religious equality and litigation activities to protect the separation of religion and government. Alison is a nationally recognized expert on civil rights law and state advocacy.
Sam Farooqui, Secretary of Secular Woman, immigrated to Florida from Pakistan when they were 7 years old, and found themself to be an atheist by 14. They went on to have a B.S. in Psychology from Florida State University, where they organized the first ever Southeast Secular Student Regional Conference as one of the founding officers of the Secular Student Alliance at FSU, focusing on grassroots community organizing not only along lines of belief and faith (or lack thereof) but also race, gender, gender identity, sexuality, and other sociopolitical identities and intersections. They are greatly interested in social institutions and systems, how they arise, and how they affect people’s lives.
Stephanie Zvan is the president of Minnesota Atheists and on the board of Secular Woman. She’s one of the co-founders of the Secular Women Work conferences. She teaches geeks about science and critical thinking at science fiction and fantasy conventions and atheists about community at national and regional conferences. Her writing on the intersection of science and politics has appeared in the Scientific American guest blog. Her work on codes of conduct is shared as a resource in the Geek Feminism Wiki and other venues. She hosts and interviews for Atheists Talk radio. You can find her writing at Almost Diamonds on The Orbit.
