Noah Elman and I had the opportunity to create and improvise a devised piece based on a specific piece of art at the Fredonia Fringe Festival.
Part 1) We chose the image and asked the audience to participate by placing at least one post-it note of each color answering the correlating question onto the board. The questions were 1) What is an emotion the image/ a person in the image evokes? 2) What is something you would hear inside the image? (Dialogue, surrounding sound, or environmental sound) 3) What is a verb depicted in the image? (ex. drinking, contemplating, singing).
Part 2) After the audience was done placing their sticky notes, we each took 5-6 sticky notes off the boards. I chose "What are they saying?", 'uneasiness', 'tick of a clock', 'fear', 'He is here', 'hovering', and 'wind through the window.'
We took those notes, left and wrote two separate poems.
Mine ended up as follows:
[What are THEY saying?
What are they SAYing?
Out in the open the questions
drip off my tongue,
hovering in the silence
you've been waiting for.
That-- silence-- is filled with the uneasy tick
of a clock,
taking note of the sections it has stolen from my life
in fear that the wind through the window might announce he is here.
He.
Is.
Here.
And so, I end with a simple question for you:
WHAT are they saying?
What ARE they saying?]
Noah's Poem:
Listen
Listen
Listen to the rain
People tell me thunderstorms are cleansing
The rain washes away any pain
Then why does the rain stick to me
Stick
Stick like the thoughts that haven’t left for weeks
When the rain and wind hits against the windows
It’s a reminder that I’m free from the claustrophobia of rain
I feel
Feel
Feel nostalgia for the day before yesterday
When the sky was grey
Grey but not threatening
Calming
But now the calm is missing
Something missing
Something
Part 3) We had an audience member read each of our poems slowly as we improvised two pieces utilizing concepts both Noah and I learned in devising class, Frantic Assembly's book and our dance improv class. We used the techniques of Around-By-Through, Filling Empty Spaces and Flight paths (which we used an interpretation called 'tracing'). And then we had our piece!
