Welcome back to Surviving Schizophrenia. It's Stephen. Living with schizophrenia and depression since I was 12 has been a long journey. Much of my depression comes from thinking about the past, but over the years I've found five personal strategies that genuinely help me cope and find joy. In this video, I want to share them with you.
Here are the five ways I deal with my depression:
1. The Power of Walking:
For me, walking is more than just exercise; it's a moving meditation. It helps me clear my mind, process difficult thoughts, and find perspective. It's on these walks that I'm reminded that even though my life is different than I imagined, it's still a great one.
2. The Dual Role of Music:
I have a two-pronged approach to music. Sometimes happy, upbeat songs lift my spirits. Other times, listening to something sad feels validating. It helps me fully experience and work through my emotions so I can move past them and feel happy again.
3. Laughter as Medicine: Watching Comedy TV Shows:
Watching classic, light-hearted comedy shows like "Get Smart" and "Seinfeld" has been a huge help since I first got sick. They offer a great escape from my illness, and I find that when I'm genuinely laughing, it's hard to feel depressed.
4. Escapism and Nostalgia Through Video Games:
Video games are a portal to a world where I don't have schizophrenia. I especially love Pokémon because it's not just an escape; it takes me back to my childhood before my diagnosis. Connecting with that simpler, happier time brings me a lot of comfort and calm.
5. The Imaginative Escape of Reading:
Like gaming, reading is a great escape, but it also engages my imagination. When I'm immersed in building a story in my mind, I can't dwell on my own struggles. It's a powerful way to shift my focus and find relief.
