Computing systems have made tremendous advances in performance and power efficiency. Artificial intelligence computing requirements- however- are outpacing architectural and technological innovations in the field- requiring innovative solutions to address the latest challenges. We discuss promising research and design directions to improve power efficiency and show the need for holistic solutions that traverse multiple areas from domain-specific optimizations to advanced packaging.
