Jean Degotex (1918-1988) was a French painter, considered a major figure in the abstract art movement of the second half of the 20th century and an important influence on contemporary art.
Known particularly for his initial association with the lyrical abstraction movement, and for the public admiration of André Breton, he followed a unique path, each period exploring a formal possibility to better pave the way for the next: from gesture to sign, from sign to writing, from writing to line. His work remains characterized by extreme minimalism, where rigor never overshadows sensitivity.
His work earned him the Kandinsky Prize in 1951 and the Grand Prix National de Peinture in 1981. His works are held in numerous public collections, including those of the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Guggenheim Museum (New York), and the Gutai Art Gallery (Osaka).
