I thought the war to green the desert was against drought. I was wrong.

Using high-resolution drone mapping, we graded my homework and discovered a massive blind spot: in the last two years, this ranch has lost a shocking 21,779 cubic yards of soil—an average of 68 cubic yards per acre—blown away by the wind. The primary enemy isn't a lack of water; it's erosion.

This drone data (thanks to 360 Drone Mapping) revealed exactly where my soil is being stripped (east-facing slopes) and why. But it also proved my other efforts are working: the maps show clear, dark green water plumes forming beneath my terraces and mega-swales, confirming the structures are successfully infiltrating water and building a desert forest.

Now, it’s time to adapt. We are directly fighting wind erosion by building a windbreak, planting new trees, and hauling in horse manure and spent mushroom blocks to infuse the soil with mycelium and organic matter, giving the dirt something to hold onto. Plus, we upgrade camp with a Z Grills to boost morale because a project this hard requires a good lunch.
