Dangerous Album Cover Merchandise + Promotional Items (1991 - 2016)

The front cover of Michael Jackson’s eighth studio album, Dangerous, was painted by lowbrow pop surrealist artist, Mark Ryden. Michael hired Mark because he was a fan of early-20th century circus posters, and Mark had the skills to interpret the imagery Michael wanted for the cover. Mark was instructed to focus on Michael’s eyes, to include animals and children, show the earth in peril, that it could be scary but should still be fun, and for it to be mysterious so that people could interpret it in their own way. The final result is what you see on the Dangerous album cover.

Dangerous Black Tee — This two-sided black t-shirt released in 2009 by Bravado features a blend of color and charcoal artwork on the front, and the charcoal artwork continuing on the back.

Dangerous Album Cover Jigsaw Puzzle — This 150-piece jigsaw puzzle, released by J&R Puzzles with Handley Printers in 1991 under license by MJJ Productions.

Dangerous Black Eyes Sleep Mask — Released in 2010 by Bravado in Japan and manufactured in China, this PVC and polyester sleep mask features Michael’s eyes from the Dangerous album cover.

Dangerous Album Cover Oversized Promo Poster — This large promotional poster of the Dangerous album cover artwork measures 36 x 36 inches. I purchased this poster, along with a Dangerous promotional store banner measuring 12 x 36 inches on eBay in 2019 for less than $10 for both. I had the frame custom-made, along with the matte, to fit the oversized poster. I have it hanging under a spotlight to showcase the artworks grand detail.

ICONIC Magazine: Dangerous 25 Issue — I ordered this from the King Of Shop online store upon its release in November 2016.

Dangerous Collector’s Edition CD — This Collector’s Edition CD of Dangerous, featuring a 3D pop-up version of the album cover, was mail-ordered in 1991. I can’t recall how we found out about of this item, but I’m inclined to think it was from information received by a local music store, or a Michael Jackson fan club I was a member of.

Dangerous Album Bin Divider Promotional Display — A Kmart employee gave this bin divider to my mom at her request in late 1991 or early 1992. The store employee tried flattening it but discovered it was glued, so they stopped. However, there is a section on the back where the employee separated it.

Dangerous Album Media Promotional Display — A Kmart employee gave this media display to my mom at her request in late 1991 or early 1992. With how large and bulk it is, being through at least 8 different moves over the past 34 years, and how it’s only made from cardboard, it does have some wear. In the store, the eight slots in the center held the Dangerous cassette tapes; the bins on the left and right held the Dangerous CDs (long box I believe); and the large bin on the bottom held Dangerous vinyl.

Dangerous: The Short Films — The VHS was a Christmas gift when Dangerous: The Short Films was first released in 1993. I purchased the DVD version some time in the early 2000’s. The LaserDisc version was received as another Christmas gift in 2022.
