Comparison in Language Learning

When learning a language, it is very easy to look at others learning languages and get into a state of constant comparison. While looking at the resources and methods that others are using can be helpful if it is being used to make your language learning more efficient or fun, it can also be unhelpful at times. In particular, attaching your self-worth, confidence, or motivation to your relative level to others can be bad at times.

The reality is that comparison is something that should be avoided often in my opinion. Your ability to analyze the situation is probably skewed, and making clear and honest judgements can be difficult. Moreover, each person is individually unique and has different experiences, objectives, interests, and other factors that influence the entire process.

In short, be careful with comparison when learning a language, especially because it can lead to a lack of motivation and derail you from your overall progress in the long term.
