पब्लिक को ये समझ नहीं आ रहा जिन लोगों ने बांग्लादेश की पाकिस्तान से आज़ादी की लड़ाई में पाकिस्तान का खुलकर साथ दिया था, वो आज बांग्लादेश में समर्थक कहां से जुटा पा रहे हैं? बांग्लादेश की आज़ादी की कहानी इतनी दर्दनाक थी, इतनी ख़ून से सनी हुई थी, इतने लोगों का क़त्लेआम किया था पाकिस्तान की सेना ने वहां पर, इतनी महिलाओं का रेप किया था। तो ये हो क्या रहा है वहां और कौन करवा रहा है? ये शतरंज की कौनसी गेम चल रही है हमारे पड़ोस में? पाकिस्तान ने बांग्लादेश को कभी चैन से जीने नहीं दिया। 1971 से लेकर आज की उथल-पुथल तक, पाकिस्तान की आईएसआई का नाम वहां कई बार ज़हर घोलने की साज़िश में लिया गया है। क्योंकि पाकिस्तान को बांग्लादेश की आज़ादी कभी हजम ही नहीं हुई। उसको अपनी सेना का शर्मनाक सरेंडर आज तक एक ख़ौफ़नाक सपने की तरह डराता है। वो भारत को कमज़ोर करना चाहता है, इस्लामी कट्टरपंथियों को बढ़ावा देना चाहता है, और अपना प्रभाव जमाना चाहता है। 1971 में बांग्लादेश क्या था? वो पूर्वी पाकिस्तान था, पश्चिमी पाकिस्तान से हज़ारों किलोमीटर दूर। वहां के लोग बंगाली थे, अपनी भाषा, अपनी संस्कृति चाहते थे। लेकिन पाकिस्तान की सरकार, जो पश्चिम में बैठी थी, उसने उन्हें दबाया। पाकिस्तान के आम चुनाव हुए, और शेख़ मुजीबुर रहमान की अवामी लीग जीत गई। यानी सत्ता बंगालियों के हाथ में जा रही थी। लेकिन पाकिस्तान ने बंगालियों को सत्ता नहीं दी। पंजाबियों को बंगालियों की इलेक्शन में जीत हज़म नहीं हुई। इसके बजाय, 25 मार्च 1971 को, पाकिस्तानी सेना ने ऑपरेशन सर्चलाइट शुरू किया। लाखों लोग मारे गए। महिलाओं पर अत्याचार किए गए, गांव जलाए गए। बाक़ायदा नरसंहार हुआ। आईएसआई ने पूर्वी पाकिस्तान में घुसपैठ की, बंगाली राष्ट्रवादी नेताओं को दबाया, और सेना की मदद से दमन किया।

The humiliating surrender of its army in 1971 still haunts it like a nightmare. It wants to weaken India, promote Islamic fundamentalism, and exert its influence. What was Bangladesh in 1971? It was East Pakistan, thousands of kilometers away from West Pakistan. The people there were Bengalis, who wanted their own language and culture. But the Pakistani government, based in the west, suppressed them. General elections were held in Pakistan, and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Awami League won. This meant that power was going into the hands of the Bengalis. But Pakistan did not give power to the Bengalis. The Punjabis could not stomach the Bengalis' victory in the elections. Instead, on March 25, 1971, the Pakistani army launched Operation Searchlight. Millions of people were killed. Women were tortured, villages were burned. A full-scale genocide took place. The ISI infiltrated East Pakistan, suppressed Bengali nationalist leaders, and carried out repression with the help of the army.
