This is the extraordinary story of an ordinary lady, Sushila Barmaiya, who has lived for 81 years, bearing struggles in life with a beautiful smile. She has something empowering and sparkling that ignites dying courage inside yourselves. When you see her and look into her shiny eyes, it seems they are narrating some painful, some joyful, some challenging, some overwhelming episodes from her life.
Let us know our beloved Sushila Barmaiya, when she was a tiny little girl with numerous dreams twinkling in her tiny, beautiful eyes. She loved playing in the farmland and mountains with her father's sister, who was almost her age. Her village, Manadehi, was located in the forest fringes of Mandla District. It was a small village inhabited by farmers. Ironsmiths and the fishers' community.
She belonged to a zamindar family of the village and had five siblings, including three sisters and two brothers. Her father owned land and practiced agriculture and vegetable cultivation on a large scale. They used to sell the produce in the nearby market of Mandla and earned a decent income to support their family.
"I loved playing in the garden with the children of the village. I still remember clearly, I was about 8 years old and I was playing with my father's sister under a large guava tree. I climbed the tree to search for ripe guava fruits. I was plucking the fruits, and she was catching them from the ground. Suddenly, I lost my balance when I was aiming for a large full full-grown fruit of guava. After some seconds, I was lying on the ground, with intense pain in my left arm. My father arrived there suddenly and came running to me, hearing my shrieking voice. He hugged me and took me to the nearby hospital immediately, and the doctor announced it was a fracture, which would be cured within two to three months. After I got well, my father never left me alone, and he always took me to the field, "recalls Sushila
She loved to wear frocks and tie her hair in different hairstyles. She was the most loved daughter of their family. She was always the first to take care of her siblings and protect them as a shield wherever they needed her help.
She still loved climbing large trees, even after warnings from her parents, she never stopped climbing trees and plucking her favourite fruits - mango, guava, and mulberry fruits. She never loved playing with dolls; rather, she spent time being with nature, walking in the forest trails, swimming in the village pond, and in the nearby Narmada river.
