"Suitcase Cabaret", the brainchild of Barry O’Neill and James Bierney, has been presented, to tremendous acclaim, all over Ireland. A fusion of tongue-in-cheek whimsy, comedy, impressions, ventriloquism and magic from Barry. Irish Song, Show Tunes, Ballads and even a little….....….opera.... from James! James sang "Stars" as part of a group of Show Songs.
Examining the nature of law and grace, the novel 'Les Miserables' by Victor Hugo, elaborates upon the history of France, the architecture and urban design of Paris, politics, moral philosophy, antimonarchism, justice, religion, and the types and nature of romantic and familial love.
Set in early 19th-century France, it is the story of Jean Valjean, a French peasant, and his quest for redemption after serving nineteen years in jail for having stolen a loaf of bread for his sister's starving child. Valjean decides to break his parole and start his life anew after a kindly bishop inspires him by a tremendous act of mercy, but he is relentlessly tracked down by a police inspector named Javert. Along the way, Valjean and a slew of characters are swept into the 1832 students "June Rebellion" in Paris, where a group of young idealists make their last stand at a street barricade.
In Act I, Javert unwittingly saves Valjean and Cosette from Thénardier and his gang's attempt to rob both of them. He then subsequently discovers that Valjean, his old time rival, has surfaced once again, but has slipped through his grasp. He vows to complete his manhunt. Javert sings "Stars" and explains some of his reasons for pursuing the law the way he does, and reiterating his resolve to capture Valjean once and for all.
Lyrics:
Javert:
There, out in the darkness
A fugitive running
Fallen from God
Fallen from grace
God be my witness
I never shall yield
Till we come face to face
Till we come face to face
He knows his way in the dark
Mine is the way of the Lord
And those who follow the path of the righteous
Shall have their reward
And if they fall
As Lucifer fell
The flame
The sword!
Stars
In your multitudes
Scarce to be counted
Filling the darkness
With order and light
You are the sentinels
Silent and sure
Keeping watch in the night
Keeping watch in the night
You know your place in the sky
You hold your course and your aim
And each in your season
Returns and returns
And is always the same
And if you fall as Lucifer fell
You fall in flame!
And so it must be for so it is written
On the doorway to paradise
That those who falter and those who fall
Must pay the price!
Lord, let me find him
That I may see him
Safe behind bars
I will never rest
Till then
This I swear
This I swear by the stars!
