Lourdes, a small town in the foothills of the French Pyrenees near the border with Spain, is one of the most famous Catholic pilgrimage sites in the world.
It became well known after a 14-year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirous claimed in 1858 to have seen apparitions of the Virgin Mary in a grotto there. During one of these visions, Bernadette was directed to a spring of water, which has since become central to Lourdes’ reputation.
