When your loved one with dementia starts pacing, yelling, or refusing to eat, it can feel overwhelming — and tempting to just try to stop the behavior.
But what if the behavior is actually trying to tell you something?
In this first video of the Playing Detective in Dementia Care series, I introduce you to the DICE Approach, a simple, effective method developed by Dr. Helen Kales and her team to help caregivers understand and respond to challenging behaviors with compassion and insight — not just medication or redirection.
You’ll learn what DICE stands for (Describe, Investigate, Create, Evaluate), why it works, and how I’ve used it in my own journey caring for my husband Ben, who’s living with Lewy Body dementia.
In future episodes, I’ll walk you through real-life examples of how I used DICE to decode behaviors like pacing and agitation — and how small adjustments made a huge difference.
You are not alone — and you don’t have to solve these mysteries all at once. Let’s play detective together.
