F-stop numbers: how do we get HALF and THIRD stop values?

I explained in this video, why F-stops jump by the factor of the square root of two:
   • Why are lens F-numbers 1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, ...  

Someone asked (rightfully so!) that even if I explained these jumps: 1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, what happens to all these other lenses? 1.7, 1.8, 2.4, etc...

Let's try to explain it! There will be some nerdy bits, but we'll get to those values, I promise!
