The great American bass-baritone sings the role of Escamillo in this performance of Bizet's "Carmen" from Mexico City. 11 October 1966. Two days after this performance, on the 18th, he appeared in Gounod's "Faust" opposite the Micaela from this performance, Gilda Cruz-Romo.
And here's a link to my Norman Treigle playlist:
• Norman Treigle (1927-1975)
In 1963, Treigle performed the role of Escamillo opposite Regina Resnik's Carmen in Dallas. Rual Askew, in The Dallas Morning News, said the Escamillo was “superbly volatile” and that he was "the most deftly balletic in our experience and his ‘Toreador Song’ was a simultaneous lesson in the bull-fighter’s art and how to restore musico-dramatic finesse to one of the most belabored arias ever written.... Mr Treigle’s remarkably individual study of Escamillo in fact prompted us to wonder what might have been if Rudolph Valentino had had such creative gifts. Imagine where the motion picture might be today!”
