JULIANA CARVER GETS A BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT!!

TODAY WAS JULIANA'S BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT! It was like a blood and/or platelet transfusion like Juliana has received over 120 times in the past but this time it was DIFFERENT. It was BONE MARROW from her birth mother Iryna.

Tammy explains what happens in the next few weeks: "What happens after the transplant: Juliana will remain in the hospital until her ANC (absolute neutrophil count--a neutrophil is a type of white blood cell) is above 500 (normal is 1500-8000) for three days in a row. She currently has no immune system--it was destroyed with the six days of chemotherapy and day of total body irradiation so she is getting antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals around the clock as a precaution. Juliana will have two more days of chemotherapy (on Monday and Tuesday) to kill any mature white blood cells that were in the marrow so they cannot attack her body. The bone marrow stem cells will not be hurt by the chemo and as they settle into her marrow and start growing will learn to recognize Juliana's body instead of attacking it. Juliana will also start taking two immune suppressant medications on Wednesday as a precaution and continue them for six months. She will need many blood and platelet transfusions in the next few months and will need to be monitored closely for signs of host verse graft disease and veno occlusive disease."
