Irina Kulikova - Isaac Albéniz/ Asturias (live @Kasteel Groeneveld in Baarn)

In Kasteel Groeneveld in Baarn, Irina Kulikova performs a beautiful piece from her 2021 album: 'It's All About the Touch’. It features every guitarist's favorite piece 'Asturias' from the 'Suite Española' opus 47 by the Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz.

Irina Kulikova, who started as a child star in her native Russia, has been traveling the world since she was twelve. “The early start of my musical career has given me something special. Music has brought me close to people from all over the world.”
In addition to a busy concert practice, Kulikova gives many master classes and teaches at various institutions around the world. Partly due to the lockdown, she decided to start an online academy this year. According to Kulikova, the classical guitar is on the rise, she even talks about a Golden Age.

‘Asturias’ has become one of the most important works of the classical guitar repertoire, but it was originally written for the solo piano.
Despite the misleading title, which refers to the northern Spanish region of Asturias and was given to it posthumously by the German publisher Hofmeister, this virtuoso piece is pure Andalusian flamenco. The main theme mimics the guitar technique of alternating the thumb and fingers of the right hand, while the 'marcato'/'staccato' markings suggest the footwork of a flamenco dancer. Another flamenco style, the malagueña, is discernible in the middle section. After a brief return to the theme, the piece ends in a slow ""hymn-like"" passage.
