The Trump administration said they would exclude electronics such as smartphones and laptops from reciprocal tariffs on Friday evening.
This move could help keep prices down for consumer electronics that are not made in the U.S. as well as benefit companies like Apple, Samsung and Nvidia, who makes chips.
Items such as smartphones, hard drives, laptops, flat panel monitors and some chips would qualify for the exemption, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials. This means the electronic items will not be subject to the current 145% tariffs levied on China or the 10% baseline tariffs.
