Two Sheds is our first residential building to enter the construction phase and has started to take shape. Enjoy a walk through with Ben Shields project architect and Sally Fowler graphic artist and illustrator.
Project Description:
Two sheds is a beach house cum rural property, currently under construction on a forested site west of Lorne. DREAMER was engaged for architecture and interior design for the project.
The clients desired a house that would allow them to interact with the landscape, easily moving from interior to exterior and provide a base for them to begin a large rejuvenation project for the site, which has been damaged by invasive flora.
The house sits modestly in the landscape and takes advantage of the naturally hilly site, whilst aiming to minimally affect the surrounding area.
The agricultural form of the project was informed by local rural buildings and is broken into 2 a public and private pavilion, each angled at 30 degrees to each other and sited along the contours of the hillside.
Verandas on the north and south facade of the building provide an extended threshold between inside and out and also assist with sun shading. A large central terrace provides a focal point for the activities of the house and a flow on outdoor dining area adjacent to the kitchen.
Internally the building provides curated views out to landscape and the windows respond to where natural light might be needed at different times of the day. Bathroom and laundry spaces were imagined as textural caves finished in a dark render with slot skylights for day lighting. The building is lined internally with Australian native timbers and externally with corrugated metal cladding. The exterior of the building was also carefully detailed to meet bushfire attack level requirements.
