Thomas John (T.J.) Powell was often refered to as the 'Welsh March King' and produced numerous quality Brass Band marches, a number of which still remain popular today.
Powell was associated with the Mellingriffith Works Band from South Wales for a number of years and, after his untimely death and loss of sponsorship, the band found themselves performing under the title of the Excelsior Rope Works Band, conducted by David Thomas on this 1969 recording for the Pye Marble Arch label.
In the last of his four 'Castle' marches we have the poor relation I think. I starts well but has the inclusion of the tune 'God Bless the Prince of Wales' which takes away the originality. It's also strange that, in the stronghold of the Welsh language, he anglicises the title!
