Women's History Month Talk 2017
‘Sophia: Suffragette Princess’ by Anita Anand
On the 18th November 1910 thousands of women from across the country marched on Parliament Square in a demonstration for the right of women to vote. Led by the formidable Emmeline Pankhurst it was an event that would make an indelible mark on history as 'Black Friday'. Amongst the famous names of the suffragette movement who marched beside Emmeline Pankhurst was Sophia Duleep Singh, Indian princess, goddaughter of Queen Victoria, high society favourite, and...revolutionary fighter for women's rights across the world.
In this talk, Anita Anand gives a unique insight into a woman whose fascinating life has remained hidden, yet who played a dramatic role in changing the very course of history.
Anita Anand is a writer and broadcaster. She presents Any Answers on Radio 4. She is the author of 'Sophia - Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary', and co-author of 'Koh-i-noor- the world's most infamous diamond'.
