Miner 2049er was a single screen platformer initially written for the Atari 8-bit computers by Bill Hogue of Big Five Software in 1982. In the following year, it was released for all four of the Atari 2600, the 5200 console, TI's 99/4A computer, and for IBM PCs. Miner has a devoted following, but while I aspire to be better at the game, I am not among those devotees. The game has some unique and rather addictive mechanics to master, but IMO the game action is much too slow to justify the complete level reset that each lost life entails. Dying is too discouraging in Miner 2049er, and for that reason it remains on the periphery of my sphere of gaming interests. However its importance to early gaming history, especially to 8-bit computer gaming, make it at least a one-time must play for students of the era.
Today we're playing the Atari 5200 incarnation of the game. Enjoy!
