This video is about the biggest goal for paleoanthropologists: finding the fossil of the last common ancestor between humans and chimpanzees. This ancestor lived around 7 or 8 million years ago in Africa and would look somewhat like both an ape and a human, showing the very first steps towards what makes us human, like walking upright. Finding this fossil is incredibly difficult because fossils are rare, the time period is ancient, the right environments for fossilization are uncommon, and the search area is vast. Scientists have found potential candidates like Sahelanthropus, Orrorin, and Ardipithecus, but none are definitively the “Holy Grail” yet. Discovering this ancestor would fill a huge gap in our understanding of human evolution and help explain why and how our lineage split from chimpanzees.
