One day, Man Gong Sunim visited his old Dharma brother, Hahn Am Sunim, in the Oh Dae Sahn Mountain's Stillness Palace Temple. While they were out walking by a stream, Man Gong Sunim suddenly bent over, lifted a rock, and dropped it right in Hahn Am Sunim's path! Without hesitating, Hahn Am Sunim lifted the rock up and tossed it into the flowing stream. Man Gong Sunim thought to himself, "Hmmmm, on this trip, much was lost." He saw a weakness in his Dharma brother's practice, and he became a little sad.
Hyon Gak Sunim discusses this seminal kong-an, and what it is pointing to in our everyday lives. How do we meet the obstacles that life presents to us, usually without warning? What "software" do we bring -- often out of sheer habit -- to our relationships, struggles, and dilemmas in life? Do we constantly function by sheer automaticity, by the same old mental apps as usual, or perhaps can we access a deeper software for dealing with life's changes and vagaries?
