Often described as London’s most notorious housing estate, Broadwater Farm Estate is a large residential development in Tottenham, North London, with a history that has made it one of the most widely recognised estates in the UK.
The estate entered national and international attention following the 1985 Broadwater Farm riot, one of the most serious episodes of civil unrest in modern British history. The events of that period, and the wider tensions of the time, played a major role in shaping the estate’s reputation and its place in London’s social history.
Built in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Broadwater Farm reflects post-war social housing design, originally featuring high-rise blocks, elevated walkways and large communal areas. Since the 1990s, the estate has undergone extensive redevelopment, including the removal of walkways, refurbishment of housing, construction of new homes and improvements to public spaces.
In recent years, long-term regeneration and building work have continued as part of wider investment across Tottenham and Haringey, aimed at improving housing quality, connectivity and the everyday environment for residents. Today, Broadwater Farm is a diverse residential community and remains a powerful example of how areas shaped by a challenging past continue to evolve in modern London.
