URGENT: Olivia Needs Life-Saving Surgery To Protect Her Kidneys

As Olivia’s paediatric surgeon, I cannot stress this enough — we cannot delay her surgery any longer.

Four-year-old Olivia Lucille Spandonis is suffering from vesicoureteral reflux — a condition where urine flows backward from the bladder into both kidneys. If the urine becomes infected, it can cause permanent kidney damage, putting her health and future at serious risk.

Olivia’s condition has already become severe. She urgently needs corrective surgery, and I’ve recommended that this be done as soon as possible. I am waiving my fees but the hospital cost of surgery is RM20,000, which her family is unable to afford.

𝗢𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 — 𝗔 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗜𝗹𝗹𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀
Since infancy, Olivia has been plagued by recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs). At first, her discomfort was dismissed as common childhood issues. But by the time she turned one, the frequency and severity of infections raised red flags.

Investigations revealed a serious congenital condition — vesicoureteral reflux on both sides. This means urine flows back into her kidneys each time she passes urine, increasing the risk of infection and long-term damage.

I’ve explained to her parents that this condition must be addressed now. The longer we wait, the greater the risk of irreversible kidney injury.

𝗦𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱
In Olivia’s case, minimally invasive surgery is the best option. This approach reduces trauma, speeds up recovery, and helps ensure better long-term kidney function.

There are no alternatives. Surgery is the only way to protect her kidneys and stop the cycle of infections that has plagued her young life.

Olivia’s parents are doing everything they can. Her mother, MA. Arelcia Bocade Spandonis (45), works as a general clerk. Her father, Peter John Spandonis (52), is an IT technician — but he suffers from high blood pressure, diabetes, and a slipped disc, which require continuous treatment.

They are loving, responsible parents who want the best for their daughter. But financially, they simply cannot meet the RM20,000 needed for the surgery.
