Scrolls of the Firelight – The Lost Album (1976):
Recorded during the height of Roots Prophet Malik’s creative power in late 1976, Scrolls of the Firelight was intended to be the follow-up to his critically acclaimed Message from the Hills. The sessions took place at Channel One Studio in Kingston, lit only by oil lamps and a single blazing fire in the courtyard—a symbolic act Malik insisted upon, saying the warmth and flickering light would “call the ancestors into the sound.”
The album took its name from Malik’s belief that ancient wisdom was not just written on parchment, but “burned into the spirit like letters in flame.” Musically, it was his most ambitious project—merging deep, rolling basslines with Nyabinghi drumming, melodica, and long, meditative dub sections.
🔥 Album Highlights:
Deep Spiritual Concept: Built around the metaphor of fire as wisdom, prophecy, and purification, every track carries a sense of mysticism and higher purpose.
Nyabinghi Influence: Heavy use of ceremonial drumming and chanting, giving the album a ritualistic, trance-like feel.
Signature Track – Ashes of the False Throne: Spoken word poetry over a deep, rolling bassline, with echoes that make Malik’s voice sound like it’s coming from a distant temple.
Militant Roots Anthem – Last Horn of Babylon: A defiant cry against oppression, with horns blasting like a call to liberation.
Dub Experimentation: Valley of Dry Bones feature stripped-back dub sections, heavy echo, and reverb that prefigure later roots-dub innovations.
Natural Soundscapes: The closing track, Voice in the Wilderness, blends live birdsong recordings with acoustic guitar and soft chanting, creating a serene, meditative end.
Legendary Status: The album was never officially released, but its myth has grown in reggae circles, with fragments of some songs said to survive on rare bootlegs.
🎤About the artist:
Roots Prophet Malik – The Mystic Voice of the 70s
Born Malik Omari Johnson in 1945 in the hills of St. Ann, Jamaica, Roots Prophet Malik was raised in a small farming community surrounded by the lush greenery of banana groves and the sound of Nyabinghi drums echoing through the valleys. His father was a fisherman and part-time storyteller, while his mother was a market vendor known for singing old spirituals as she worked.
From a young age, Malik showed a deep connection to rhythm and spiritual teachings. At age 12, he joined a local church choir but quickly grew fascinated with the Rastafarian elders who gathered under the great silk-cotton tree to chant and reason. By 16, Malik had fully embraced Rastafari, adopting the name Roots Prophet Malik to reflect both his devotion to Jah and his mission to spread conscious messages through music.
In the early 1970s, he moved to Kingston and began performing at backyard sessions and sound system clashes, where his haunting baritone and poetic lyrics caught attention. Malik’s music blended roots reggae, Nyabinghi drumming, and spiritual chants, often laced with prophecies and biblical references.
His breakthrough came in 1973 with the single "Babylon Shall Tumble", recorded at Harry J Studio with a raw, stripped-back sound. The track became an underground anthem, banned from Jamaican radio for its fiery anti-colonial message but beloved by the grassroots.
Today, Roots Prophet Malik is remembered as one of reggae’s most mysterious and uncompromising figures—an artist whose influence can still be heard in the conscious reggae of modern times, even though he recorded only one official album: "Message from the Hills" (1976). Original pressings are now rare collector’s items.
