The Qiantang River is affected by a large tidal bore, developing from the Hangzhou Bay and propagating upstream for more than 100 km. On 22 October 2024, the propagation of the tidal bore pas the Cao River sluice system was observed and the impact on the gates was documented. While the initial impact of the bore on the gates was moderate, large subsequent impacts were seen caused by whelps and bore reflections on piers, walls and other gates. After the bore reflections, the advection of large scale surface vortices was observed towards the right bank upstream of Cao river sluice system.
