Behold the Lamb of God (Christmas Eve) // Chris Meads // The Last Advent

On Christmas Eve, Pastor Chris Meads invites the church to step into the long season of waiting that God’s people have always known. He reflects on childhood anticipation and connects it to Advent, when Israel waited centuries for the promised Messiah. That waiting ends, not with a political rescuer or national hero, but with the shocking announcement that God Himself has come.

Walking through the opening of the Gospel of John, Pastor Chris explains that Jesus is not merely a baby in a manger or a sentimental Christmas story. He is the eternal Word, with God and as God, who has entered human history. When the Word becomes flesh, God is no longer distant or abstract. He is revealed, seen, and known. In Jesus, humanity encounters the invisible God face to face.

John tells us that this revealed God is full of grace and truth. Pastor Chris unpacks this tension. God is abounding in grace, delighting to show favor to sinners who do not deserve it. At the same time, God is perfectly true, righteous, and just, never overlooking evil or denying His holiness. The question becomes how grace and truth can coexist without compromising either.

The answer arrives through John the Baptist’s stunning announcement. Instead of proclaiming Jesus as a conquering warrior or political king, John declares, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” This title reaches back to Exodus, the sacrificial system, and the promises of Isaiah. Lamb after lamb was only a shadow. Jesus is the substance. He is the true Lamb who stands between the judgment of God and the people of God.

Pastor Chris shows that the Messiah being a Lamb explains how God can be both gracious and just. Jesus bears sin in the place of sinners. The Lamb dies, and the people live. Because of the cross, grace is unleashed without denying truth. Salvation is not only forgiveness from guilt but freedom from the power of sin and restoration to life as it was meant to be.

The sermon culminates in a clear invitation. Every person must decide what to do with Jesus. The Lamb has come. Salvation has begun and will one day be completed. The call is to behold Christ, turn from sin, and believe, trusting the One who came in humility and will return as King.
