One of The Last Great Performance Diesels? | BMW X5 M50d (F15) Review - Beards n Cars

The BMW X5, particularly here in F15 generation 3.0 M50d form, is one of those cars which you really need to drive and think about to fully appreciate. In retrospect now in 2025 and beyond it feels like a last stalwart of a going era, that of the 'fast diesel'. They seemed few and far between for the most part, but reality is there were some lovely examples on the market - many of which were from BMW alone, and my thoughts on how superb many of these still feel are of course seen in previous episodes of Beards 'n Cars, including the 635d, 640d and even Alpina D3...

In the case of this SUV or '4x4' as we mostly call them in the UK, it really is an undeniably impressive package, simultaneously offering 380 horsepower and over 730 Nm of torque while returning up to 45 mpg on the motorway, and all wrapped up in a proper 7 seat platform which managed to be lighter than the earlier E70 shape X5, while still retaining its (by modern standards) modest physical size, which particularly in Europe feels like a rarity in this sector of the market given how large SUV's have become over time.

So let's head out on the road around Glastonbury to put together my thoughts on the F15 shape BMW X5 M50d, and consider if buying one would be the right choice for your tastes and circumstances...
