This is a presentation of the study behind the article Beyond the Periphery: Child and Adult Understanding of World Map Continuity (by Pontus Hennerdal and published 2015 in the Annals of the Association of American Geographers). The study based on responses from 752 people (children and adults) shows considerable difficulties to accurately indicate where an aircraft passing the edge of a world map comes back to the map. Among the incorrect answers a trend is detected, a trend that in the study is referred to as linear peripheral continuity.
A short video (clay animation) explaining linear peripheral continuity is available here: • A common misunderstanding about the edge o... and the published research article can be found here: http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/00045608.20...
A version of this presentation was originally presented in Tampa 2014 at the annual meeting for the Association of American Geographers (AAG).
