Watschentanz, or Watschenplattler, is the most well known of the Gauditänze, or amusement dances. It is believed to have originated in Holzkirchen, a town in Bavaria, in 1907. This dance can be done with or without women, but when performed it usually includes women for entertainment purposes. The Reit im Winkl plattler is featured during the chorus plattler section of the dance. This schuhplattler also features a section where the men try to "slap" eachother while the other man ducks. This is done by the man ducking clapping their hands in a discrete way so the audience thinks they were hit! Since this dance is considered a cabaret style dance, many groups would refuse to perform it when it was first created, as it is not a traditional Schuhplattler dance.
This dance was performed by Nick, Edgar, Melissa, and Charlotte, four of our senior members in Das ist Keine Kunst.
****Due to the music having slapping and stomping already in it, sometimes the beats can feel a bit off when we edit and overlay the music with the video, so we decided to remove the original audio. For a clearer beat for the plattler section, please watch the end of the video for the plattler section only or a video of us performing this on our channel. Thank you!****
