My 5th pool match was against Ryan. It seemed like he was going to be another big hitter so I was preparing to slice a lot of balls back to try to frustrate him. But I ended up finding that he was actually very adaptable and tweaked his strategy whenever I changed things up.
He broke early to take the lead 3-1. I then started implementing the slice game and broke his serve too and held my serve to reach 3-3. But he adjusted and started playing safe loopy short balls which I failed to re-adjust to put away. We ended up with super extended safe rallies that made us look like 3.0. One lasted 1min 30secs, which I lost anyway. He breaks at 5-3 and holds to win 6-3.
Second set, I decided there wasn't enough time to play every point this way, and I wasn't having much fun either. Back to the net rush. Loads more fun for the both of us. Happy that I managed to keep the score pretty close with my favourite playstyle and fought back down 3-0 to 4-4, but ultimately lost the next serve and he held to win 6-4.
Final score, Ryan wins 6-3, 6-4.
Hi! I’m Ray and I play NTRP 3.5-4.0-ish level tennis in Singapore. Many players are self-rated on an app called Reclub, where we find hitting partners.
The Nasi Lemak Open is organized on Reclub, split into 3 Divisions (4.0+, 3.5 and 3.0-). There is a pool stage where we play everyone in our pool first, earning points for wins. The top 2 in each pool then goes on to an elimination stage.
I’m (grey shorts) self-rated 4.0, I serve and volley and rush the net whenever the opportunity arises.
Ryan is in the black shorts and without shoes on late in the 2nd set.
