'Raakhite Narili Premojol' sings Parvathy Baul

The waters of love cannot stay in a half-baked pot, says Baul poet Manohar Khepa. What trials must we undergo? How can our vessel be fired, baked and strengthened in the kiln of love, to become truly worthy of it? When shall we become capable of 'holding' love? Parvathy gives many cues, but doesn't give anything away. She insists that the meanings of these enigmatic songs are not the subject of intellectual cogitation. They will arrive within each of us in their own time, if we are receptive to them through a comprehension that encompasses our entire body and being.

Manohar Khepa was an accomplished Baul poet and practitioner who wrote several Baul songs, especially related to the human body. Along with Baul, he had also immersed himself in yoga and tantra.

If there is an embodiment of intensity, Parvathy is it. As our friend, as an advisor, as a fiery challenger, she has brought us into deeper touch with ourselves. This recording was made as part of our week-long immersion with Parvathy at her home and akhada on the outskirts of Trivandrum in September 2011. She warmly welcomed us, housed us, fed us, sang for us and spoke to us with great depth and insight about the Baul path and about life itself. An experience that we still carry with us.

Parvathy Baul is a Baul singer and saadhika, painter and storyteller from Bengal and has been a disciple of Shashanko Goshai and Sanatan Das Baul. She divides her time between her home in Trivandrum, Kerala and the Baul ashram she has built near Shantiniketan in Bengal. (https://parvathybaul.com/)
