Massimo Coen (Rome, 11 March 1933 - Rome, 23 February 2017): "Talking Violin N.3"
Massimo Coen (Rome, 11 March 1933 - Rome, 23 February 2017) was an Italian violinist, musician and composer.
Founder of the group I Solisti di Roma in 1961, he collaborates with important exponents of the cultured musical avant-garde, especially in the context of Nuova Consonanza (from 1960) and of the Roman association Beat '72 (1964). In 1963 he founded the Quartetto Nuova Musica, an ensemble dedicated to contemporary music. In 1979 he began his career as a composer, with particular attention to the new languages of string music. Also in the 1970s, Massimo Coen was a member of the Board of Directors of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, of the Italian Musicians Union and of the A.I.M.A.S. (Italian Association of Self-managed and Experimental Musical Complexes). In the 1980s, Coen's activity diversified between theater (La Zattera di Babele), research on Futurism (National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome) and discography. In the 90s collaborations in the jazz field intensified, while he continued his activity as an avant-garde composer and musician. From 1996 he began to work on the recovery of his Jewish roots through collaborations with his son Gabriele Coen, the discovery of Klezmer music and the revival of authors such as Salomone Rossi, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Ernst Bloch and Elio Piattelli. In the last part of his career, Massimo Coen supports the need for a recovery of the linguistic elements of the past, flanked by extra-cultured popular languages, without denying the research and achievements of the avant-garde.
