Falkirk Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the Central Lowlands of Scotland, and roughly halfway between Edinburgh and Glasgow, is the town of Falkirk.

The first written record of Falkirk dates to around 1080 when it was called 'Egglesbreth' or 'Egglesbrech' in Gaelic, which means, allegedly, 'spotted/speckled church'. Historically it was part of Stirlingshire.

In 1298 the Battle of Falkirk took place between England and Scotland. William Wallace (a.k.a. Braveheart) led the Scottish troops, but was defeated by the English, led by King Edward I (a.k.a. Hammer of the Scots). Shortly after the battle Wallace resigned as Guardian of Scotland.

In 1746 The second Battle of Falkirk took place, also known as the Battle of Falkirk Muir. This was part of the Jacobite Rising, which was an attempt to reclaim the British throne by the Stuarts. The British monarchy was held by the Hanoverian king, George II at the time. Charles Stuart, a.k.a. Bonnie Prince Charlie, led the Scottish attack which resulted in victory for the Jacobites. A lack of coordination after the battle meant they failed to capitalise on the success, and the rising ultimately failed.

From the 18th century Falkirk began to transform from an agricultural town into a major manufacturing centre during the Industrial Revolution. In 1759 The Carron Ironworks was founded on the banks of the River Carron near Falkirk. The works made the carronades (large-bore cannons) used by the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic Wars. James Watt cast some of the beams for his early steam engine designs at the Carron Ironworks in 1765.

In 1790 The Forth and Clyde Canal was opened. This was followed, in 1822, by the Union Canal, providing Falkirk with a means of transportation of goods to Edinburgh, Glasgow and other settlements. A series of additional iron manufacturers was established during the 19th century including the Falkirk Ironworks, Grahamston Ironworks, Gowanbank Ironworks among others.

From the 20th century, there was a steady decline in demand for iron goods and Falkirk as an industrial centre began to decline. The town’s role in Scottish history is echoed in its surviving historic buildings and local folklore.

Falkirk is represented in sport by Falkirk Football Club & East Stirlingshire Football Club, both of whom share use of the Falkirk Stadium just east of the town centre.
