The ship operates as an independent community, largely cut off from immediate external support, emphasising the utmost importance of safety. We have implemented a comprehensive range of safety measures on board, especially considering the possibility of facing emergencies in the vast expanses of the Atlantic, Pacific, or Indian Ocean. In this video, I offer a concise overview of our fire-fighting equipment and the procedures for its use in the event of a fire outbreak.
At the core of our fire-fighting capabilities is the fire control station, serving as the central hub for remotely managing fire incidents on the ship. This fixed fire fighting station is equipped with high expansion foam to combat gaseous fires, dry powder, and CO2 fire-fighting equipment. Additionally, we have portable fire-fighting tools, including portable fire extinguishers for handling small fires, strategically placed throughout the entire accommodation area. These fire extinguishers undergo regular inspections to ensure their reliable functionality.
In addition, the ship is equipped with fire heads - a comprehensive fire detection system featuring sensors strategically placed throughout various areas, including everywhere in the ship's engine room, deck, stores, galley, and accommodation spaces, to swiftly detect and respond to potential fire incidents.
Moreover, all personnel on board are mandated to undergo basic fire-fighting training, in adherence to the guidelines established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). While aboard, each individual is designated to a specific fire-fighting team: deck personnel join the attack party if a fire breaks out on the deck, while engine room personnel form the attack party if the fire originates in the engine room.
Furthermore, every individual on board is well-acquainted with the ship's fire alarm system and is aware of their designated muster station, and a weekly fire drills are carried out to ensure preparedness.
Typically, the chief engineer assumes responsibility for the fire control station and the deployment of fire-fighting equipment, although permission from the master is sought before deployment. Nevertheless, everyone on board is familiar with operating the equipment in case the chief engineer is unable to do so.
