Dynomotion's 6-Axis Cable-Driven Demonstration Robot

We needed a low-cost and portable 6-axis machine to demonstrate our control boards and software. We needed this machine to be a little more interesting than a typical 6-axis robotic arm that people have seen before. We also wanted it to work well in an office environment so we can use it in our development work.

To that end, we developed a cable-driven machine we affectionately refer to as Geppetto. Geppetto is quite simple: he uses 6 stepper motors fixed to a table that each wind a cable onto and off of a spool. These cables are strategically fixed to an end-effector that is held aloft by a spring assembly. That's pretty much it.

We are still pushing the limits of this machine, but in the little time we've had we mounted a pen for plotter operations, a camera and a laser for calibration routines, and the requisite spoon for sugar dispensing operations. Who knows what's next.
