They had the book. They have HAD the book ever since the Heresy Era. The Dark Angels wanted that book.
The Word Bearers, the dark spawn of Lorgar, held information that might lead the Unforgiven further on their Hunt for the Fallen. That information belonged with the Sons of the Lion and they were willing to slaughter as many Heretics as was necessary to gain this information.
Loyalty is its own reward and this was a burden the First Legion were strong enough to bear.
