Gunung Lambak in Malaysia’s Johor state is a great training or beginners hike. It may stand at just over 500m, but it still presents a test as you attempt to eat your food without attracting the attention of the ever-present hordes of monkeys. Join Richard and the SG Trek gang as they take on the challenge.

The Trail
The Gunung Lambak trail is similar to most mountain trails in Malaysia in that it involves hiking over tree roots and sticky orange clay soil.
The trail is around 5.7km return and the good thing is that there is a loop trail which means you can come down a different way to your ascent.
Hiking boots or shoes are recommended, although you could probably get away with wearing running shoes in dry weather.
Travel Logistics
The Lambak trailhead is around a 90-minute drive from Singapore and not far from the town of Kluang.
There is no public transport to the trailhead itself, although you could take a Grab taxi from Kluang town and it likely won’t cost too much.
I made the trip with Singapore-based travel agent SG Trek, who organised everything including transport, permits and guides.
Drones
There are no known restrictions on the use of drones around Gunung Lambak.
