In November 2024, I spent an extended weekend in Albania's capital city, Tirana. This city captivated me with its energy, a blend of modern architecture and historical landmarks, and above all, its warm-hearted people. This was already my third trip to Albania, and certainly not the last – this country never ceases to amaze me with its beauty, culture, and excellent cuisine.

In this video, I’ll take you on a journey through Tirana and show you everything you can experience during your visit. Tirana is an ideal destination for a weekend getaway, but if you have the chance, I recommend dedicating at least two days to explore it. Most of the main landmarks are located in the city center, making it easy to discover them on foot. The heart of Tirana is vibrant and rich in history, and within a short walk, you can visit numerous fascinating sites.

One of the city's key landmarks is Skanderbeg Square, a grand square named after Albania's national hero. Here, you can relax, admire the statue of Skanderbeg on horseback, or explore nearby historical sites such as the Et'hem Bey Mosque and Kapllan Pasha Tomb. Another attraction is the Pyramid of Tirana, a futuristic structure that once served as a museum. Today, it stands as a symbol of the city’s contrasts, blending past and present. Close to the Pyramid, you’ll find the Postbllok Memorial – Checkpoint, a reminder of Albania’s repressive communist era.

Tirana is a city with a rich and complex history, which is reflected in its many museums and landmarks. I highly recommend visiting BUNK'ART 2, a former military bunker in the city center that has been converted into a museum. The exhibition offers a deep dive into Albania’s dark history during the communist dictatorship, a time when the country was rife with spies and people were constantly monitored. If you have time, don’t miss BUNK'ART 1, located on the outskirts of the city. You can reach it via a cable car ride to Mount Dajti, which is an experience in itself. The cable car offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding landscape, and once you arrive, you can explore the military bunker, take a pleasant walk, or enjoy lunch at a restaurant with panoramic views.

Albanian cuisine is one of the reasons I keep returning to this country. For an authentic experience, make sure to visit New Bazaar – Pazari i Ri, where you’ll find fresh produce, local goods, souvenirs, and traditional Albanian spirits like rakija. The market is the perfect place to sample local specialties and chat with the friendly vendors.

The center of Tirana also features modern architectural elements, such as The Cloud, a unique art installation that’s a popular meeting spot for locals and tourists alike. Don’t miss the Resurrection of Christ Orthodox Cathedral, a stunning Orthodox church that ranks among the largest of its kind in the Balkans. History enthusiasts should visit Tanners' Bridge, a historic bridge that once connected ancient trade routes. It’s a beautiful spot for a quick stop and photos.

Tirana is a city that has so much to offer – from fascinating history and modern art to excellent food. Moreover, Albania is one of the friendliest and most affordable countries in Europe, making it an ideal destination to explore. I hope this video inspires you to visit Tirana and Albania.
