When you are in the music studio it is always important that you have the right reliable equipment on hand to get the best results.
The right professional audio equipment can make a huge difference in your results. The goal of this review is to see if the Golden Age can deliver the professional sound it promises.
We review sound engineering processes using the Golden Age Project in music production to get a feel for this music technology and see if it does perform as promised.
Everything Old is New Again
The age of the clone is in full swing. Today’s equipment seems to be going for the old school sound that is favored in certain genres.
Every month new clones are revealed. The GAP is a fine example of a clone that delivers old school processes at a fraction of the cost of the original equipment.
Comp-3A is their latest rendition.
It is a “clone” of the Audio/UREI Teltronix LA-3A. The processor which inspired the Comp 3A was a hybrid which balanced optic controls with solid state circuitry. The 3A has incorporated all the wanted features of the LA-3A while delivering the tweaks that actually improve function!
What You Need To Know
The 3A uses a 24V AC power supply. You can use either the included power supply line PSU or you can plug into the Golden Age half-rack which is sold separately. On the rear is where you find all the jacks.
Input, output, XLR and TRS jack as well.
The front of the 3A is hauntingly familiar and looks a lot like the LA-3A. plenty of controls, yet it feels very uncluttered and has an intuitive layout.
The peak reduction and gain controls are joined by a side chain filter, which can leave the gain less responsive at low frequency levels when you turn the controls clockwise. The Stereo link is conveniently located on the front panel which makes it easier to connect two units.
Using a small flat head screw driver or a similarly small flat tool into the mono trim pot will let you adjust the pot to suit your specific needs.
Making this adjustment will let you get the full stereo compression and help you to avoid problems with flickering.
Be sure to set your controls to similar behavior. You can do this by setting things up by ear instead of by sight.
Just like on the original you have two ratios to work with. You can set it at 4:1 or 10:1. 10:1 is the upper limit, 4:1 is the lower.
Hooking It Up and Using it
You can easily install the Comp 3A as an external effect on your DAW. Setup takes minutes.
We used it on several selections and found that it really did perform well for an optical compressor.
It was fast, it was accurate and was easy to use. We were not too happy with the absence of the attack and release control but we were able to work around it.
Overall
For the money this compressor delivers exactly what you need in the audio studio. While it may not be the best pick across all genres it definitely held its own when it came to hip-hop, rap and R&B vocals.
We loved the fact that it was a quick and easy compressor to reuse. You are able to use your favorite presets for the majority of your mixing and mastering and do it with confidence unlike other compressors this really is a one and done experience.
The price is right, the results are great and ultimately the recommendation is that you should be making room for this equipment in your studio is well-worth the small investment.
