At 12:55 PM AKDT, or 4:55 PM EDT, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake was detected 55 miles south of Sand Point, Alaska. This triggered Tsunami warnings for the entire Alaska peninsula.
Half an hour after the last Tsunami Warning was issued, it was downgraded to a Tsunami Advisory, which still holds the same threat, but without widespread inundation. The Tsunami Advisory remained in effect for 6 hours until 9:04 AKDT, when it was apparent that the tsunami generated would only cause a small rise in sea levels, and would not pose a significant threat to life and property.
